Principal's Message

July 31, 2017

Greetings Wilder Middle School Families,

I hope you and your scholar(s) are having a productive and relaxing summer filled with great adventure.  In five weeks, your scholar will be walking through the doors of Wilder Middle School as a new or returning scholar for the 2017-2018 school year.  From day one to the end of the school year, all faculty and staff will provide your scholars with an excellent educational experience.

During the 2016-2017 school year, we made progress towards our goal of attaining full accreditation.  We showed growth in four out of five of our content areas as recorded in the Preliminary Spring 2017 SOL data.  We continue to remain accredited in social studies, and we are approximately 8% points away from meeting our accreditation target in the area of science and math.  Reading and writing also showed marginal growth this past school year.  These higher levels of performance and improved culture are an indication of our renewed commitment to student achievement and a reflection of the hard work of all staff members to reach each scholar.  During our "Back to School Night", I will share more in depth academic performance and culture data from the 2016-2017 school year.  In my fourth year as principal at Wilder Middle School, I'm looking forward to moving our bus closer to our goal of meeting accreditation.  I am eagerly anticipating meeting and working alongside all of my families to continue this amazing work.

Our motto this school year will remain the same: "One Team.  One Family.  One Vision.  One Promise."  It is a clarion call for unity and it will guide our faculty, staff, scholars, families, and community members as we create a more positive school environment where all of our scholars can achieve at the highest level.  Our motto also speaks to the fact that the only way we will meet our goal (being accredited) this school year is when all stakeholders, have a common language, and the same level of dedication and resolute grit in every situation, while embracing the positive changes that are being implemented.  It is also our promise that every staff member will be committed to providing an excellent educational experience and the highest level of customer service to all scholars and families on a daily basis.  It is our vow that each staff member will work relentlessly to ensure that all of our scholars possess the scholarly habits and skills necessary to be successful in high school, college, and beyond.  It is also the vow of each member of our school's leadership team to provide the appropriate level of encouragement, coaching, support, and feedback to each staff member during the school year.  Finally, every staff member, scholar, and family will commit to being positive and solutions-oriented on a daily basis even in difficult situations.

Our theme for the 2017-2018 year is "Achieve, Pursue, Innovate!"  Throughout the school year, the verb achieve will constantly remind us that in order to close the achievement gap that exists, all stakeholders must first firmly believe that all scholars at WMS can achieve their goals regardless of their socio-economic background, race, or other challenges that exist in their lives.  This firm belief, coupled with quality instruction and instructional supports on a daily basis, will create an environment that is conducive for our scholars to achieve the academic and personal goals they have set for themselves.  The verb pursue will remind us to continue to support and motivate our scholars to relentlessly pursue their dreams and goals, despite the roadblocks they many encounter along the road to achievement.  In order for our scholars to contine to be change ambassadors in our school community and in their neighborhoods, it is our responsibility to teach them how to think outside of the box and become innovators.  Finally, we want all of our scholars to realize that those who innovate are champions of change who will lead us to academic and cultural achievement.

At Fee Night on August 31, 2017 from 4:00-7:00pm, you will have the first opportunity to meet our staff and ensure that all of your scholar's fees are paid before day one so your scholar(s) can have the tools necessary for learning.  You will have another opportunity to build collective capacity on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, during our Back to School Night (check our website for more details regarding the event).  Finally, you will have the opportunity to join our PTSA, in addition to committing to be an active participant with our PTSA.  Again, I look forward to meeting ALL of my WMS Families and I am expecting great things from our scholars this school year.

In partnership,
Solomon Jefferson
